District of Heinsberg
The district of Heinsberg is the most westerly district in Germany, a region in the centre of Europe. Cities such as Cologne, Düsseldorf, Aachen, Maastricht, Liège, Eindhoven, Mönchengladbach, Krefeld, Duisburg and Bonn are all within an hour’s drive. The cities of the Ruhr region are within a two-hour drive, as are Brussels, Antwerp and Amsterdam. The district of Heinsberg shares 77.5 kilometres of the 171-kilometre-long district border with the neighbouring province of Limburg in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The district of Heinsberg feels part of the Rhineland, but in terms of cultural, linguistic and artistic history it also belongs to the Meuse region.
258,306 (as of 31 December 2021) live on an area of 627.99 square kilometres. Ten towns and municipalities make up the district of Heinsberg. The district seat is the town of Heinsberg. Other towns in the district are Erkelenz, Geilenkirchen, Hückelhoven, Übach-Palenberg, Wassenberg and Wegberg. There are also the municipalities of Gangelt, Selfkant and Waldfeucht.
Together with the project participants from the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, the district of Heinsberg has already been a project partner in the INTERREG V EMRLingua project and has helped to strengthen the multilingualism and intercultural competence of children, young people and educational experts in the Euregio Meuse-Rhine.
Since July 2024, the Centre for Municipal Education and Integration of the district of Heinsberg has been involved in the INTERREG VI ‘Connect’ED’ project.
